A club BBQ on the 5th of flaming (wet) June!
On a wet Sunday this spring two of our club members, husband and wife team, George and Madelaine Phillips went ahead and hosted a barbecue for the Club members as a social event. At the end of the afternoon they found that a small profit had been made –and we all went home damp and happy. Madelaine, in true banking fashion, decided to maximise the profit. She dutifully approached her employers and succeeded in obtaining a donation to match the afternoons proceeds. Having told the tale I think that belated thanks are due to the Phillips’ household and HSBC for bolstering the original profit, thus enabling the club to donate £193 towards Rotary Foundation and £102 towards Polio eradication.

Youth achievement recognis Girls swept the board at this year’s student Rotary Awards at Ferndown Upper School, with Lauren Spencer, Natasha Wakelin, Charlotte Durling and Amy Kirkham being recognised for going that extra yard, for outstanding achievement over a range of activities both in school and within the wider community. Lauren Spencer and Natasha Wakelin shared the honours for the community service award, giving of their evenings, weekends and holidays to ‘Become a Befriender’ for supporting those less able in doing what any other might do. Amy Kirkham picked up the award for sports, for gymnastics, for obtaining and then using her professional coaching qualification to train youngsters while not only judging but also competing at events, all this while still producing high quality work as part of her A level studies. Charlotte Durling collected the award for endeavour – turning out work to degree standard while also participating in an array other activities including a Tall Ships voyage and the Duke of Edinburgh Gold award plus contributing to the school jazz band. Speaking of the awards, the President of Ferndown Rotary Club, Antonino Perella said: ‘At a time when youth too often attracts headlines for the wrong reasons, it's great to be able to show the flip side and also gratifying to know that the four we have recognised today were the best from many in the school that were considered for any one of the awards.’ ‘The four of them are a credit to themselves and to Ferndown Upper School’ were his closing comments. The winners collected a shield and a cheque for £30.00.

Although a team from Jupiter Unit Trust Managers beat 30 others to take the top honours in the Ferndown Rotary Charity Golf tournament, the ultimate winner was the Lewis-Manning Time to Care Appeal. Lewis-Manning’s Elizabeth Purcell left the Canford Magna tournament venue with a cheque for the £5300.00 raised by the event.
Speaking at the presentation, Keith Puttick, President of the Ferndown Rotary Club, said: ‘Despite the harsh economic climate, the event continues to enjoy fantastic support from local businesses and sponsors, not least the event sponsors, the Hendy Group. Its thanks to all of them that we have been able to raise such a respectable sum this year. We are delighted that the money has gone to the Lewis-Manning Hospice, in particular to the Time to Care Appeal that is dedicated to the funding of new facilities that will enable thehospice to widen the range and depth of specialist support it already provides to local people in need,’ he closed |

Well Done and Thank You' Ferndown Upper School
Pupils at Ferndown Upper School have broken their own record for a ‘non uniform day’ by collecting a massive sum of £724.16 for Rotary international End Polio Now campaign, The money raised will be enough to fund the immunisation of 3620 children. On the last day of the autumn term pupils were invited to forego their school uniform for the day providing that they included something purple in their attire or on their person. This was to represent the colour of the dye applied to a child’s little finger to show that they have been immunised. A cheque for £724.16 was presented to Ferndown Rotary at a school assembly.

Youth Speaks Rotary’s national public speaking competition
On time - the winning team from Ferndown Upper School: (l-r) Luke Mitchell, Natasha Wakelin and Toby Bastable. |
Ferndown through on time
Two teams, each of three Year 12 pupils, addressed a packed house, including Rotarians, teachers, parents and three independent judges, on subjects preset by Rotary. Each team consists of three people – a chairperson, a speaker and a proposer. The chairperson had two minutes to introduce the speaker; the speaker had 6mins for the main address and 2mins to respond to questions from the floor (from a pre-nominated member of the audience); and then the proposer had 2mins to deliver a vote of thanks. Ferndown Upper School successfully secured its passage to the semi finals of Rotary’s national public speaking competition ‘Youth Speaks’ on 26 February thanks to its immaculate time keeping. To win through they beat a team from Blandford School whose oratory, though excellent at the podium, was denied the top spot by timing overruns, in particular in replying to a question from the floor, thus handing victory to Ferndown Upper School – albeit by a slim margin. The winning Ferndown Upper School team each received a £20.00 high street voucher and all competitors received a certificate.
Editors note: Among others things, Rotary Youth Speaks aims to provide young people with the experience of speaking on a public platform, with the added discipline of dealing with a topic within a limited time.
